NATIONAL SALUTE TO HOSPITALIZED VETERANS
President Nick Marine has asked me to encourage NERA chapters and members to get involved with the VA's National Salute to Hospitalized Veterans. This is an annual event that occurs at all VA Medical Centers the week of Feb. 7-13, 2010 in conjunction with Valentines Day and Ann Landers' program of sending valentines to hospitalized veterans. When meeting or corresponding with members and chapter officers of NERA across the country I ask that you encourage them to get involved with the VA Medical Center serving their area by calling or visiting the Chief, Voluntary Service at the hospital and asking what they can assist with during the week of the National Salute to Hospitalized Veterans and to set up visits with our hospitalized veterans. This program was established: *To pay tribute and express appreciation to hospitalized veterans. *To increase community awareness of the role of the medical center. *To encourage individuals to visit hospitalized veterans and to become involved as volunteers. This is an opportunity for local chapters and members to step forward and assist our hospitalized veterans. Mike Hughes, OSC, USNR (Ret.) NERA Deputy Executive Director NOTE from NERA’s President: The National Salute for Hospitalized Veterans should be an annual push for all hands. This event will not only show support and respect for our forgotten veterans but will also give NERA members another opportunity to become more active. In Atlanta, we involve local schools: students prepare personal Valentines Day cards. I can also assure you that no one will be denied access for this event.
