The Naval Enlisted Reserve Association - NERA - is the only military and veterans organization representing the ENLISTED RESERVIST members of the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. We include retirees, Full-Time Support (FTS), drilling reservists and others joining as associate members supporting our enlisted sea service reservists. In more than 50 years, NERA has been responsible many of the pay and benefits gains reservists enjoy today and take for granted. Why NERA? Today, more than at any other time, Reserve Enlisted members are called upon more often to mobilize frequently to serve our nation. The challenges are many - strain on families, strain on civilian careers and an operational tempo for even "normal" reserve duties that exceed the conditions of less than 10 years ago. Strength in numbers. NERA has been there on Capitol Hill, in the Pentagon and other policy making levels working hard for legislation to protect your benefits, your family, your health care and your retirement. Join us and ensure your voice is added to the many. Join us to continue the success and the fight to keep your benefits strong. We are your shipmates - your fellow veterans. NERA is about you - the working Sailor, Marine and Coast Guardsman.

NERA Members Bare A Hand
An Invitation from CUCM Jerry Swift, HMCM Manny Ratner and ENC(SS) Bill Vincent: We invite you to join us - each NERA Sailor, Marine and Coast Guard Life Members, Associate Life and Commissioned Life Members-to contribute $10 in a "booster" donation.
Our office itself-the Falls Church house-is old and like a ship, occasionally needs "service life extension" repairs. The headquarters is an asset we own and need to maintain its value. This past year alone, the heating system needed a major $3,700.00 repair. Your donation reinforces your commitment as a life member and will keep NERA going. No other organization exclusively represents the Reserve Enlisted Members of the Navy, Coast Guard and Marines both drilling and retired. Now we have a long, protracted war on terrorism with mulitple mobilizations and veterans coming home seriously injured. NERA is working on all these. Please join me in donating today-keep NERA working for us. Thank you for your Honor, Courage and Commitment! BARE A HAND Member List

Message from the President
The Northeast/MidAtlantic Conference was held on March 28/29 at NASJRB Willow Grove. It was a great success with almost 80 people in attendance. The next Regional Conference will be hosted by our Windy City Chapter on April 19 and we are hoping that those of you in the area will attend. Steve Sandy will be in attendance and will be bringing attendees up to date on what has been happening at National HQ. As we draw near to the National Conference, I want to remind you to submit your nominations for the 1776 Award. The submissions can be in letter format but please provide as much detail as possible regarding the individual you are nominating. Don’t forget to get the word out on the Scholarship Applications. You will find detailed information on the website and in the current issue of the Mariner. Speaking of the Mariner, please let us know what you think of the current edition. Our staff has worked very hard over the past few months to produce this fine magazine. I am excited about their ideas for upcoming issues as well. We also need to hear from those Chapters who have held events or who are making contributions in other ways. Please send emails and photos and a short description to MC1 Brian Brannon at Marinereditor2@nera.org so we can insert it on our Faces of NERA page. On February 26, the Department of VA issued a news release stating that military veterans who have served in combat since 11/11/1998 are now eligible for five years of free medical care for most conditions (up from a two year limit). This is for medical treatment outside of any medical conditions related to military service. It applies to care in a VA hospital, outpatient clinic or nursing home. It also extends VA dental benefits from 90 to 180 days. Combat veterans who were discharged between 11/11/1998 and 1/16/2003 and who never took advantage of the VA’s health care system have until Jan. 27, 2011 to qualify for free VA health care. This 5 year window is also open to activated Reservists and National Guard if they served in a theatre of combat operations after Nov. 11, 1998. After the five years of free VA coverage, you may also be entitled to continue VA care by paying co-payments ranging from $8 for a 30 day supply of prescription medications to $1,024 for the first 90 days of inpatient care each year. For more information, contact your local VA or go online to http://www.va.gov/opa. Joanne Elliott National President
