physical abuse some of my sisters are now experiencing.
When I entered the Navy, I had Chiefs who had served in
WWII, Korea and Viet Nam. e training I received from
them was invaluable. I received the con dence that I never
knew I had. ose that I served with always treated me with
respect and I felt part of a “family.” Maybe being attached
to a reserve unit where I spent many years with the same
people lent itself to a di erent environment. Today we see
many who are only with a unit or a detachment for a rela-
tively short period of time. ey do not have the time or the
inclination to form lasting relationships. From some of the
articles I’ve read, there seems to be a disconnect that wasn’t
present during my 28 years in the Navy.
While in the Reserves, I worked several jobs – sometimes
4 at a time. I worked full-time for several large law rms in
Philadelphia over 40 years; I co-owned a French Restaurant
for 5 years; and have been in the real estate business for
over 43 years. All of this while continuing to serve in the
Navy Reserve and now as National President of NERA,
Commander of VFW Post 6495, Service O cers for my
VFW Post and for the Jesse Soby American Legion Post
148 in Langhorne, PA. Additional I am a member of the
Chief Petty O cers Association at Fort Dix, NJ and at
NSA, Philadelphia.
